Balcony bra vs. bralette: which one is right for you?

· 4 min read · By Moxy's Muse

Three women in Moxy's Muse lingerie: a black lace bralette, a white satin bralette and a red lace balcony bra

A balcony bra lifts and shapes. A bralette feels like barely anything. Neither is better: they simply do different things for you.

Here is how they differ, how each one feels through a full day, and how to choose between them.

What is a balcony bra?

A balcony bra has underwired cups cut lower and wider across the top. It lifts from below and shapes the bust into a soft, rounded line, without the volume of a push-up.

Our Phoenix Balcony Bra is made this way:

  • Underwired balcony cups
  • Soft lift, no push-up padding
  • Adjustable straps and gold hardware
  • Sized by band and cup, from 70B to 85D

It sits beautifully under a wide or square neckline, and gives structure when you want your outfit to sit just right.

What is a bralette?

A bralette is a wire-free bra with light, unpadded cups. It follows your natural shape instead of reshaping it, and is made to be worn all day without you noticing it.

We make two:

  • June Bralette: soft mesh and smooth satin, lightweight cups with gentle support. Designed for everyday wear.
  • Pixie Bralette: delicate embroidery with an open-back strap detail, made to be seen under a low back.

Both come in XS to XL.

Which one should you choose?

Choose by the day you are dressing for, not by a rule.

Choose a balcony bra when

  • you want lift and a rounded shape under a fitted top or dress
  • you wear a wide, square or sweetheart neckline
  • you like the feeling of being held in place

Choose a bralette when

  • comfort comes first and you want to forget what you are wearing
  • your outfit is loose, soft or has a low back
  • you prefer your natural shape

You may well end up with both: a balcony bra for the days that need structure, a bralette for the days that don't. That is why every set comes with a matching bottom, so the piece you reach for is always complete.

How to find your size

All you need is a tape measure and two minutes. Wear an unpadded bra, or none, and keep the tape level.

  1. Underbust: measure directly below your bust, where the band sits. Keep the tape snug.
  2. Bust: measure around the fullest part, letting the tape rest without squeezing.
  3. Compare: for Phoenix, find your underbust first, then the bust measurement next to it. For June and Pixie, the same two numbers point you to XS-XL.

Our size guide does the matching for you, in cm or inches. Bra and bottom sizes are chosen separately in every set.

Still unsure? Size exchanges are always free.

Frequently asked questions

Is a balcony bra the same as a push-up bra?

No. A push-up adds padding to create volume. A balcony bra lifts and shapes with its cut and wire alone. Phoenix has no push-up padding.

Is a bralette comfortable enough for every day?

Yes, that is what it is made for. The June Bralette is designed for everyday wear, with lightweight cups and gentle support.

Can I wear a bralette with a larger bust?

It depends on how much support you want. A bralette offers light support; if you prefer lift and hold, a balcony bra is the better choice.

How do I care for lace and satin?

Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, or use a lingerie bag on a cold, delicate cycle. Air dry flat and never tumble dry. More in our care guide.

What if my size isn't right?

Size exchanges are free, and you have 21 days to return.
